SHREWSBURY, N.J.— A new Planet Fitness location has opened in the Shrewsbury Plaza shopping center and a grand opening with community events - and a fundraiser - is planned for May 25.
Along with a day of special events in Shrewsbury, the company announced its initiative for the summer: Teens ages 14 to 19 can work out for free at all Planet Fitness locations for the summer, a spokesperson for the company said.
The new 21,751 square-foot Shrewsbury facility features cardio machines and strength equipment, 30-minute express circuits, numerous flat screen televisions and spacious locker rooms and showers, according to the company.
On May 25, the location will have its grand opening at 2 p.m., paired with a Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County fundraising event, a Hustle for Healing, in which participants can use the facility. In addition, Planet Fitness will donate $500 to the Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County at the event.
There is a raffle for a one-year membership for anyone who checks into the club or signs up on May 25. And merchandise is 20 percent off that day.
The facility is offering a membership plan that day for a first month free for anyone who joins during the event, but only on May 25.
There will be other prizes and giveaways.
The health club franchise, known for its "Judgement Free" zone, offers members ways to improve their physical and mental wellness.
The free admission for teens started May 16 and the program will last through the summer, said a company spokesperson in a press release.
A new national study commissioned by Planet Fitness found that 93 percent of American teens want to stay healthy and active over the summer months, but many lack motivation or access to do so. It's with this in mind that Planet Fitness is giving teens a chance to stay active this summer in a safe, judgement-free environment.
The Shrewsbury club is open and staffed Mondays through Fridays from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
